Production Update #5: Binder Box Sample 2
about 2 months ago – Fri, Apr 23, 2021 at 12:01:14 PM

Hello Everyone!

First, a quick heads-up that I will be charging cards for shipping and add-ons through Backerkit very soon. You should receive an email when it processes.

Binder Box - Sample #2

I got the revised sample from the manufacturer, and it looks much better. There are a couple minor blemishes on the cover and a crease on the inside liner paper, but the cover doesn't show scratches nearly as easily and the rivets are in much more aesthetically pleasing locations.

(Note: The brightness of the light in the photos shows the blemishes on the outside and inside more clearly than you would see in normal light.)

Next Steps (not necessarily in this order)

  • Finalize things with the binder manufacturer to ensure quality standards are enforced. Then give them the go ahead for mass production.
  • Give the pocket page manufacturer the final specs to order the custom pocket pages.
  • Finalize the card box designs and order the cards.
  • Publish the digital package and distribute your copies via DriveThruRPG.

We are currently still on track for delivering your rewards in July.

That's all for now.

Cheers!

Production Update #4: Digital Package & Binder Box
2 months ago – Sun, Apr 11, 2021 at 12:01:27 PM

First of all, there are still a handful of stragglers that haven't completed their surveys. If you are one of these folks, please do so at your earliest convenience. I need this to send you any rewards.

Digital Package

Will be uploaded to DriveThruRPG and distributed in about two weeks.

Here's a preview showing guidance on how to use the Character Inventory Sheet:

Binder Box

I received a sample of the Binder Box from the manufacturer. It looks pretty darn good. I was impressed with how sturdy it is. However, there were a couple changes I asked them to make:

1.    The rivet locations lined up awkwardly with the artwork, so we worked out a different size mechanism that would result in more aesthetically pleasing rivet locations.

2.    The surface finish I had originally selected (matte) looked fantastic...at first. Unfortunately, it is easily scratched and the dark color shows scratches clearly. I want these boxes to survive quite a bit of use, so I changed the surface finish to gloss with a linen texture. This costs a bit more, but I think it'll be worth it.

The manufacturer is in the process of sending me a revised sample.

The picture below shows both of these issues. The green dots indicate the new rivet locations. If you look closely on the lower right quadrant of the image, you can see some scratches on the surface.

And here are a couple pictures I took in my living room while playing around with the sample...

Forgive the lighting. Kind of washed it out with too much light.
Morrigan approves. It is a box.

Until next time,

Gareth

Production Update #3: Surveys & Character Inventory Sheets
3 months ago – Sun, Mar 28, 2021 at 10:24:33 AM

Hey Everyone!

Surveys have been sent out. Please complete it as soon as you get a chance.

If you don't see it in your inbox, be sure to check your spam folder. If you can't find it anywhere, shoot me a message.

Character Inventory Sheets

...are finalized!

There are two versions: form fill and non-form fill. Here are a couple examples...

There are total of 15 different versions with grayscale character images, plus a blank one you can put your own image in.

All 15 Character Images

Note: When you insert an image into a form fill field, it will automatically scale it down to fit the entire image into the box. You cannot manipulate it. For best results, your image's width to height ratio should be the same as the box. This is an annoying but unavoidable problem with Adobe. The only way around it is to have the paid version of Adobe Acrobat and just edit the pdf yourself to insert anything and manipulate it however you want it.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about in the "Character Portrait" box:

Left: Image is tall and narrow, so it gets scaled way down to fit in the box. Right: Image is proportioned to fit in the box without scaling.

That's all for now. Cheers!
